The provision
of adequate blast resistant walls is an integral part of the
design of many industrial applications such as an offshore
topside structure where they are required to protect personnel
and safety critical systems from the consequences of an
explosion and subsequent fire. Many designs of existing walls
prior to the Piper Alpha Tragedy shown below, were firewalls and
only considered low blast pressures in locations around the well
head.
A recent joint industry project has
addressed key issues relating to blast loading and fire
characteristics which culminated in the full-scale testing of a
topside module. This illustrated that pressures of several bar
are possible which can result in severe structural damage. As a
result, many platforms require retrofitting to provide
additional capacity.
Operators
are now required to submit safety cases to the authorities
having jurisdiction and Safety Executive to demonstrate how
major hazards have been identified and reduced to as low as
reasonably practical. The focus of this project was to develop a
novel method to upgrade existing firewalls and blastwalls in
conjunction with key organizations in the offshore industry.
DuraSystems engineers wall and barrier systems that provide
explosion and blast resistance followed by prolonged fire
exposure. Designed specifically to protect personnel and
equipment from the effects of explosion, fire, impact, and the
effects of smoke and fumes in hazardous environments, such as
offshore oil and gas platforms, petrochemical installations,
chemical plants, military establishments, and hazardous process
plants.
Predictive engineering is important. In
reality only a limited number of large scale tests can be
performed due to the cost and safety implications. The
development of efficient simulation tools is a necessity if
improved safety is to be maintained. It was important to
correctly model the strain rate effect using reliable material
data at the weld boundary. DuraSystems has this tool.
DuraSystems in conjunction with the Steel
Construction Institute developed a computer program that
provides predictive engineering. The FireBlast system as it is
called, can
design blast resistant walls and barriers that resist blasts and
post blast fires. The FireBlast program has been tested on large
scale tests that prove it simulates the effects of blasts and
has achieved Lloyds of London approval. Any wall or barrier
designed by the program will have a Lloyds Register
certification that acknowledges its approval. This approval is
something that very few if any other companies have obtained.
DuraSystems’ FireBlast program is used to
determine the structural requirements for blast walls and
partitions. Structures designed by the FireBlast program and
DuraSystems’ DuraSteel offers significant protection from
hydrocarbon blasts and fires. These walls and barriers are H
(hydrocarbon) rated fire rated and can be engineered by the
FireBlast program up to 2 bar blast protection.

The
DuraBarrier
DuraSystems recently launched a new pre-engineered
modular barrier, designed to protect people and
property. DuraBarrier has been recognized by FM Global
as an exterior transformer separation and will help
prevent the spread of fire.

Fire, Blast, Moisture &
Impact Resistant

Each DuraBarrier is constructed to be completely pre
engineered, modular and assembled in the field by way of
fasteners. Our DuraBarrier module is Fire, Blast,
Moisture, and Impact resistant. |
